ENGLAND HANDED SELECTION CONCERN AS THREE STARS SET TO MISS TUCHEL’S CAMP

THREE ENGLAND STARS SET TO MISS THOMAS TUCHEL’S SQUAD AHEAD OF INTERNATIONAL BREAK

Thomas Tuchel is set to begin England’s latest international camp without three high-profile Premier League players.

The Three Lions are preparing for a busy period of international football, with attention already beginning to turn towards the next major tournament. England’s upcoming matches will provide Tuchel with another opportunity to assess his squad and develop his plans, but the manager will have to cope with several absences.

Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer is one of the biggest names expected to miss the camp after suffering a hamstring injury. The midfielder has been an important attacking option for both club and country, making his absence a significant setback as Tuchel continues to assess his options.

Palmer played the full 90 minutes during Chelsea’s 3–0 defeat by Brentford on Friday, but according to The Athletic, he is now expected to miss England duty as he manages his workload and continues his recovery.

The situation comes at an unfortunate time for Palmer, particularly because Tuchel had recently spoken about what he expects from the Chelsea star.

When selecting Palmer for the England squad, Tuchel made it clear that being selected was only the beginning. The German coach said the midfielder would need to perform and demonstrate that he deserves to establish himself in the team.

“It is one thing to be nominated, like with Cole, and getting your ticket back in the squad, but it’s another thing to perform for England,” Tuchel said.

“Cole needs to step up when he comes and he needs to show these kind of numbers to get his place, keep his shirt and justify the nomination.”

Tuchel also explained why Palmer had been included, pointing to his improved numbers after a difficult previous campaign.

“Cole has his starts that he always had, but he has his numbers back – he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back – so that is why he is in the squad.”

The England manager added that Palmer had a point to prove and described the international camp as an opportunity for the player to demonstrate his quality.

However, his latest hamstring problem now means Palmer is unlikely to have the immediate opportunity to respond on the international stage.

The Chelsea star has made an encouraging start to the current campaign, registering four goals and two assists in seven appearances. That represents a positive return after injury disrupted much of his previous season.

Palmer struggled with thigh and hamstring problems last campaign and eventually finished with 11 goals and three assists in 34 appearances.

His injury troubles have been a recurring issue, and the latest hamstring problem will therefore be closely monitored by Chelsea and England.

Manchester United are also expected to lose two players from Tuchel’s squad. Marcus Rashford, who has become a regular member of the England setup since Tuchel took charge last January, is reportedly dealing with a hip problem and is expected to withdraw from international duty.

Rashford started Manchester United’s 1–1 draw with Fulham on Sunday, but manager Michael Carrick revealed afterwards that the forward had been substituted during the second half because of an injury concern.

His potential absence means Tuchel will have to consider other options in attack as he prepares for the upcoming fixtures.

Rashford’s situation will also be monitored by Manchester United, with the club likely to prioritise his recovery rather than risk aggravating the problem during international duty.

Kobbie Mainoo is the third England player expected to miss the upcoming camp. The Manchester United midfielder is also struggling with an injury issue and is expected to withdraw from the squad.

Mainoo was part of England’s World Cup squad but did not make an appearance during the tournament. His absence from the upcoming international fixtures will therefore delay another opportunity for him to impress Tuchel.

The three withdrawals give the England manager another selection challenge as he continues to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

England’s long-term focus is now beginning to shift towards the 2028 European Championship, which will be hosted across England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

For Tuchel, international breaks provide valuable opportunities to work with his players, assess different tactical options and determine which individuals can become important parts of his plans.

The latest injuries mean he will instead have to make adjustments before the next fixtures.

Palmer’s absence is particularly notable because of the comments Tuchel made when recalling him. The manager had indicated that the Chelsea player needed to demonstrate his value and show that he could compete for his position in the team.

Tuchel had also praised Palmer’s improved attacking statistics, highlighting his goals and assists as evidence that he was returning to his previous level.

The midfielder himself recently spoke about the physical difficulties he experienced last season.

During a live stream, Palmer expressed his frustration about dealing with injury problems, saying: “I had one leg for 10 months, f***ing hell, what do you want me to do?”

That comment underlined how difficult the previous campaign had been for the Chelsea star.

Now, with another hamstring issue emerging, the priority will be his recovery rather than international involvement.

For Tuchel, the latest developments underline the importance of squad depth. Losing three Premier League players at the same time means other members of the England squad could be given additional opportunities during the upcoming fixtures.

The international break will therefore provide an opportunity for other players to make an impression, while Palmer, Rashford and Mainoo concentrate on recovering from their respective issues.

England’s preparations for the next stage of their international journey will continue, but Tuchel’s plans have already been disrupted by injuries before the squad has even gathered.
