CALLUM MCGREGOR CELTIC POST-MATCH MOMENT SPARKS FURIOUS REACTION AFTER FERENCVÁROS DEFEAT

Callum McGregor has found himself at the centre of attention following Celtic’s painful 3-1 defeat to Ferencváros after footage appearing to show the captain leaving the pitch while some of his teammates remained behind to acknowledge supporters began circulating on social media.
The brief clip has sparked a strong reaction among sections of the Celtic support, particularly because McGregor is the club captain and has traditionally been one of the players expected to stand in front of the supporters after difficult results.
The footage appears to show McGregor making his way towards the tunnel at full-time while Kieran Tierney, Cameron Carter-Vickers and other Celtic players continued towards the supporters inside Celtic Park.
The moment came after another extremely disappointing night for Martin O’Neill’s side, who suffered their second heavy defeat in the space of five days.
Celtic had already been beaten 3-0 by Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday before Ferencváros arrived at Parkhead for the opening match of the Europa League league phase.

There had been hopes of an immediate response from Celtic, but those hopes quickly disappeared during a chaotic evening in Glasgow.
Ferencváros took the lead through an own goal from Liam Scales in the 20th minute. Celtic responded before half-time when Mika Baur restored parity in the 44th minute, giving the home supporters hope that their side could turn the game around.
However, that optimism lasted barely a minute.
Kristoffer Zachariassen put the Hungarian side back in front during first-half stoppage time, leaving Celtic with another mountain to climb before the interval.
Things became even worse shortly after the restart when former Celtic winger Daniel Arzani produced a stunning finish to make it 3-1.
The final whistle confirmed another damaging result for Celtic, with supporters left frustrated after watching their team suffer consecutive defeats against Rangers and Ferencváros.
It was against that backdrop that the footage involving McGregor began attracting attention. For many supporters, the sight of the captain appearing to head towards the tunnel while other senior players remained on the pitch immediately raised questions about his decision.
McGregor, however, did not simply disappear from the aftermath of the defeat. The Celtic captain subsequently faced the media and spoke openly about the team’s difficult situation, including an interview with TNT Sports in which he admitted that Celtic were going through a painful period.

McGregor described the defeat as a “tough” and “sore” one and acknowledged that aspects of Celtic’s play had become “a little bit broken” and “nervy”.
He also insisted that the squad had to stick together and work through the difficult period rather than allow the defeats to completely derail them. TNT Sports reported that McGregor called on his teammates to “fight” their way through the situation. (TNT SPORT)
That post-match response adds an important layer to the discussion surrounding the video.
The footage itself is only a brief snapshot of what happened immediately after the final whistle. It does not establish why McGregor walked towards the tunnel or whether he deliberately chose not to join his teammates in acknowledging the supporters.
He may have been heading towards further media commitments, or the moment may simply have reflected his immediate emotions after another difficult defeat.
What can be established from the footage is that McGregor left the pitch while several teammates, including Tierney and Carter-Vickers, remained behind and moved towards the supporters.
That difference in actions was enough to generate debate among fans, particularly given McGregor’s status at the club.
The captain has spent many years at Celtic and has experienced virtually every type of occasion during his career. As one of the most senior figures in the dressing room, expectations surrounding his conduct are naturally high, especially when results go badly.
But one short video does not provide enough evidence to determine what McGregor was thinking at that precise moment.
The wider context also matters.
Celtic had just suffered their second consecutive defeat, conceding six goals across the two matches. The Ferencváros loss also came at Celtic Park, making the result particularly difficult for the supporters who stayed behind after the final whistle.
McGregor later acknowledged just how quickly confidence can disappear when results turn against a team.
He stressed that Celtic could not afford to feel sorry for themselves and pointed towards the upcoming meeting with Rangers as an opportunity to respond.
The timing of that fixture only increases the scrutiny surrounding the captain and his teammates.
Celtic now face Rangers again on Sunday, just days after suffering a 3-0 defeat at Ibrox. The Europa League setback has added another layer of pressure to an already difficult week.
For now, the debate surrounding McGregor’s post-match actions is likely to continue online.
Some supporters will see the footage as evidence that the captain should have remained with his teammates to acknowledge the fans, while others will point towards his subsequent media appearances and his willingness to speak publicly about Celtic’s problems.
What cannot be determined from the video alone is whether McGregor intentionally ignored the supporters.
The clearest evidence of his response to the defeat came afterwards, when he faced the cameras and admitted that Celtic were hurting.
The captain now has another opportunity to demonstrate that response on the pitch when Celtic meet Rangers again, with supporters waiting to see how the team reacts after two consecutive defeats.
